<text>
Sir,

When cholera was in Paris and throughout France everyone was afraid. If the plague were to break out it would be the same. There exists, however, a disease just as serious that has existed since the time of Christopher Columbus, as it’s said that it was he and his followers who brought us this horrible venereal malady. It is an awful disease, sir, and one to which only unprofitable attention is given, particularly in Paris. This fate would have been avoided if they had had, like everyone, horror. For I was an honest worker, sir – alive, happy, always singing – before being stricken by this horrible scourge, of whose awful consequences the working class is unaware. I used to be happy, very happy, and now suffer from horrible, constitutional syphilis. I lead a languishing life, my health tormented by horrible pains. I ardently desire the death that I will have the courage to give myself when my faculties no longer permit me to make a living that supports the existence of four people. My arms nourish my family and allow them to live honestly. Oh sir, would that it were easy – not to entirely eradicate this evil, for that act would be impossible – but at the very least to make it known to all and inspire a panicky terror. All of these charlatans’ posters claim they will cure you while traveling, while working, and at little cost, which makes society believe that these diseases are nothing, which means that the honest worker who does not read medical books and who only occupies himself with doctors when he is sick does not dread these diseases and plays with his health and, sir, for pity’s sake, would that alongside these posters there were six more honest ones, signed by a distinguished man, that detailed all the horror of this evil. Sir, tell them that there are consequences. Tell them that those who are today gifted with good health, with Herculean strength, will in little time become, if they are stricken by constitutional syphilis, beings of [horror, misery?], just one part of the chronic ills resulting from these diseases. Tell them that if they marry their wives and their children will be stricken by this evil. Oh sir, you would incite such great terror and it would be so useful, and this idea would be applauded. And to think that there is only one hospice for men and one for women open to invalids when they are incurable or near to that state. Would that for only a year a supplemental hospital was opened to relieve many unhappy people to whom remedy could still be given and who the doctors had pronounced as suffering from constitutional syphilis. If they are honest men they should not marry since they know that this evil in the blood is transmissible and that a woman, who sometimes brings her wisdom during marriage, will catch this venereal illness when she becomes a mother, and that the child who is born of this marriage will be corrupted. Yes sir, in the Hospital of the Midi I saw other people similar to me in ignorance and conduct that left the hospital and said, “I am going to get married.” Those people were stricken by constitutional syphilis as a result of these marriages. Yes sir, would that posters were put up on all the walls of Paris; that a severe punishment was given to those who did not respect them; that the police made sure that there were not so many wretched women debauching so many wretched men; that the many houses selling wine did not receive these same women, who trail corruption behind them. The evil will be less severe, believe me, when each person is warned by thousands of booklets that one could have sent to every family. Everyone would act with more caution and there would be fewer unhappy people, even though prostitutes do not have the right to go out at night. For these women stop the old man, the child, [and] the honest worker who, coming back from a meal with his friends, finds himself stopped and may cede to the coquetry and fondling of these wretched women. And for one moment spent with her he loses the health that he will never again recover and ends up going to die at the Hospital of the Midi in St. Louis or at Bicêtre. Yes sir, think for a moment and understand that many people, without being debauched, are stricken by this evil that they would have avoided if they had understood it better, and that many men would not go about with tramps [coureuses] that they don’t know, and that very often workers, in the thought of having a cheap evening coat or a hat, would prefer to wear a canvas coat and conserve their health and not fear the scourge, and wanting neither posters nor pamphlets that could be distributed to every worker. No, sir, it would be less indecent than the prostitutes that the young apprentice sees every evening while returning from his work, and who often is used to hearing immoral talk and seeing indecent things. Most importantly, sir, the posters should say that all women giving themselves over to prostitution will be punished at least with one year of imprisonment and there will be fewer of them [prostitutes]. There will also be fewer single women and fewer old maids. There will be fewer invalids in the hospices suffering from the effects of these diseases and Bicêtre, instead of receiving people suffering from venereal diseases beyond cure every day, will have more beds for the elderly who wait with impatience to be admitted.
It is horrendous to leave so many unfortunate people in ignorance and, sir, you must be stricken with this evil to be able to understand it. I don’t dare to tell any of my friends about the evil with which I have been stricken. Every day I see young people with whom I work who play with their beautiful health and who I know go out with women of ill repute and I do not dare to tell them what they are exposing themselves to. I do not dare to communicate to them the terror that this scourge would inspire in them and maybe that tomorrow, instead of this gaiety they have, they will cry like me over their unfortunate fate and their ignorance.
Receive not, sir, I beseech you, my opinion, for a worker without education can not allow himself to give his opinion to a man of distinction, but one hundred workers have cried and cry still and desire the benevolence of their countrymen. Urged by these posters, anyone who remains in the slightest contact with this evil will be healed, cauterized like the bite of a snake or of a mad dog.

</text>
